Axtell Boys Secure Third Straight 1A Track Title

The Axtell boys track and field team captured the Class 1A State Championship on Saturday in Wichita for the three-peat.

They dominated the field finishing the meet with 90 points while second place Kiowa County finished with 34 points.

Junior Landon Schmitz won the gold in both hurdle events, senior Brandon Schmelzle won the gold in the long jump, and they swept the gold medals in all three relay events.

Sophomore Logan Sandmann won the silver medal in the high jump and senior Gavin Shaughnessy won the bronze medal in the 3200m run.

They didn’t lose a single track meet all season while they swept first place at every meet in all three relay events, and in the process of all that they broke eight school records.

Let’s not forget that most of these kids are part of the four straight state championships in football and also the state basketball championship from this past season.
