Huskers Win Season Opener Over Southern Miss
Nebraska put on an offensive display Saturday, behind the arm of quarterback Taylor Martinez. The Huskers racked up 632 total yards of offense in a 49-20 win over Southern Miss. Offensive coordinator Tim Beck says he always knew Martinez had it in him... and says the hard work he's put in paid off. (play audio :12)
Martinez threw for 354 yards and 5 touchdowns, a new career high. His passing completion rating was 76 percent... a good start to his promise of a 70-percent completion rating.
The biggest story of the afternoon, though, was the injury to Rex Burkhead. He left the game early with a reported sprained M-C-L. Running backs coach Ron Brown was pleased with how his other backs, Ameer Abdullah, Braylon Heard and Imani Cross stepped up in Burkhead’s absence. (play audio :17)
Burkhead was spotted walking past reporters after the game. He walked swiftly, but gingerly with a wrap around his left knee. Coach Beck says they will know the extent of his injury later this week.
