Nemaha Central Takes Care of Jackson Heights to Advance in the Thunder Classic

The Nemaha Central girls basketball team opened play at the Thunder Classic on their home floor Tuesday night with a 56-44 victory over Jackson Heights in the first round.

Both teams came out firing offensively in the opening eight minutes, but the Thunder closed the first quarter strong to take a 22-15 lead over the Cobras. Scoring slowed in the second quarter, though Nemaha Central was able to extend its advantage to 34-23 by halftime. From there, the Thunder kept Jackson Heights at arm’s length the rest of the way.

Nemaha Central placed three players in double figures, led by Emma Hermesch with 16 points. Kennedy McKee added 14 points, while Caroline Nordhus recorded a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds.

With the win, the Thunder improved to 10-3 on the season and extended their winning streak to eight games after opening the year 2-3.

Jackson Heights dropped to 5-7 overall, marking its sixth straight loss after a 5-1 start. The Cobras were led by Brynn Shupe with 16 points, while Chesnea Cochren also posted a double-double, finishing with 14 points and 11 rebounds.
