Horton Girls and Jackson Heights Boys Open 2025 with NEKL Wins

The Horton girls and Jackson Heights boys opened up their 2025 portion of their schedules with wins on Friday night. 

Girls: Horton 54, Jackson Heights 33

Horton posted a 15-0 run in the first quarter and didn't look back on their way to beating the Cobras. 

The Chargers (3-3, 2-2) led 17-5 at the end of the first quarter and then would lead the game 32-16 at halftime. 

The duo of Carly Huftles and Marlysa Banks led the way for Horton as Banks led all scorers with 19 points while Huftles added 17 points and seven rebounds. 

The Cobras (1-5, 1-2) were led by Chesnea Cochren who finished the game with 14 points and five rebounds. 

Both teams struggled from the free throw line as Jackson Heights finished 3-of-11 while the Chargers finished 6-of-17 at the line. 

The Chargers outrebounded the Cobras 35-30. 

Boys: Horton 48, Jackson Heights 54

Jackson Heights led for a majority of the game but the Chargers would make things interesting down the stretch. 

Horton (5-1, 3-1) had a chance to tie or take the lead towards the end of the game but were unable to get it done. 

The Cobras (3-3, 2-1) got four straight free throw's from Austin Zeller in the final seconds to help secure the win. 

Drake Mellies led Jackson Heights with 20 points and four rebounds while Sir Peek added 10 points and six rebounds. 

Horton was led in the game by Tayvion Kahbeah with 18 points while Donte Masqua finished with 10 points and 14 rebounds. 

The Chargers had the slight rebound advantage of 24-23 while the two teams combined for just 17 turnovers in the game. 

The Cobras finished the game 13-of-21 at the free throw line while Horton finished the game 5-of-11 at the line.
