Perry Smith of D-West named Sports in Kansas Coach of the Year

Doniphan West girls basketball coach Perry Smith has been named the Sports in Kansas 1A-I Coach of the Year. 

Smith led the Mustangs to their first State Championship in school history with wins over Central Plains, Norwich, and Quinter in the Championship game. 

The win over Central Plains in the first round was very significant as they had won every contested state title from 2014-2022. 

Smith had the luxury of having three big time seniors with Kyra Johnson, Avery Weathersbee, and Claire Cole. 

Outside of his seven seasons with the Mustangs, Smith spent time coaching the Wetmore girls and Atchison County boys. Smith has compiled 245 career wins with a 101-64 career mark with Doniphan West. 

He led the Mustangs to a third place finish at state in 2021 and he also has fourth place finishes while he was at Wetmore in 2012 and 2016.
