11/11/2013 6:12 PM | Regional Sports

Nebraska sophomore Shavon Shields has been named the Big 10 Player of the Week in men’s basketball.  The 6-7 sophomore scored a game-high 28 points in Nebraska’s 79-55 season-opening win over 2013 Sweet 16 participant Florida Gulf Coast

Shields Shot 61.5 percent (8-for-13) from the field and was 12-for-12 from the free throw line, pulled down six rebounds and dished out three assists against zero turnovers in 35 minutes.

His 28 points were the most by a Big Ten player during the opening weekend of the season and the most for a Nebraska player in a season opener since 2008.

Shields earns his first career Big Ten Player of the Week honor.
